objectivos

To provide students with the necessary knowledge in order to understand, analyse and characterize the solid waste management operations, in an integrated view, including technical parameters of treatment processes and environmental impact assessments, so as the main EU drivers and legislation for waste management.

competências

The student must be able to:

- Define the most appropriate technology in order to manage a solid waste;

- Establish mass and energy balance of the different processes of treatment;

- Establish integrated waste management models and evaluation of environment impacts based on life cycle analysis.;

 - Apply the EU law about solid waste management.

conteúdos

1. Introduction to waste management. Types of waste. Principles. National and european laws on solid waste management.

2. Physico-chemical processes. Process variables. Material and energy balances. Efficiency.

3. Properties of wastes. Calculation basis.

4. Collection and transport of solid waste. The different collection systems. .

5. Mechanical treatment of solid waste. Unit operations. Material recycling. Targets.

6. Thermochemical treatment. Incineration. Characteristics of the process: the main operational variables of process control.

avaliação
Avaliação discreta:
  • 50.00% TP (Exame)
  • 25.00% TP (Trabalho/Monografia )
  • 25.00% TP (Relatório)
requisitos

The student must have elementary knowledge of chemistry, physics and thermodynamics.

metodologia

Theoretical lessons and application problems sessions with the use of pocket hand calculators, diagrams and computational applications.

Some experimental work will be conducted and operating variables recorded. The results will be analysed and understood.

A visit to a waste management facility will be organised.

Some defined themes are also worked and exposed by the students.

A set of presentations about the different matters are also available for download.
